Hammerheads can grow to 20 foot long and weigh up to 1000 pounds, but mostly they are smaller and are pose little threat to humans.
Hammerheads are threatened by commercial fishing, which is mainly for their fins. They are long-lived, but have few young which makes them vulnerable to overfishing. Unfortunately their head shape increases their likelihood of getting caught up in gillnets - thankfully these types of nets have been banned in most areas of the world, but illegal gillnet fishing still exists.
